Comic strip controversy vs. Christian believers
Exodus 20:7 Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.
Comic strip controversy from Agape Press
What started this: the comic strip “Boondocks” used the name of Jesus Christ as an exclamation point over the Oprah shopping fiasco in France.
A Christian reader responded to the paper and then Rev. Mark H. Creech wrote his piece on this as well through the Agape Press on-line daily mailer.

After reading the first article from Rev. Creech, I decided to send my two cents worth to the Raleigh N&O which follows (edited for this format) :
****************************************************************************
Here is a headline for your next edition: 'Boondocks' big bumble brays intolerance!
Well, your comic strip "Boondocks" sure did create a great big bumble! I, too, am adding my complaint about the name of Jesus Christ being used in such a flippant and disrespectful way. Perhaps, no one associated with this 'group' of newspapers is a Christian (although, shame on you for remaining silent if you are....) but regardless, as a believer or not, you should have respect for the beliefs of others that are different from yourselves.
If it was McGruder's intent to give Ms. Oprah a hard time for showing up after the shop in question had already closed, then he blew it in his own inimitable way. Perhaps, Jesus Christ means nothing to you or to him. But to forget that this country was founded on Christian principals and that many of us practice these principals; and to then scorn, ridicule, and denigrate those beliefs is very intolerant of you all.
Therefore, I am speaking up!
I can just see your argument now. Mr. McGruder was practicing--his right to freedom of speech.
Except, his speech was not tempered with respect for others. Just because we have freedom of speech, does NOT give us the right to be hateful, intolerant, disrespectful or bigoted.
If he had used Allah's name or Buddha's name, the response would be no less outrage on the parts of those believers. But in today's society, I have to believe that McGruder nor yourselves would have chosen those names because it is not those religions that are under attack right now.
In the last decade, there has been consistent and repeated attacks against "Christians". The media in all its forms has tried to revoke Christians' rights every chance they can through ridicule, misrepresentation, misquoting and smug attitudes of self righteousness appearing as if only the media has the 'truth' and the intelligence to impart that truth. Only this campaign has really backfired on you all. Christians are more verbal than we were a decade ago. In other words, "we're mad and we're not taking it anymore"!
In conclusion, it would be really nice to see your newspapers and Mr. McGruder apologize for their insensitivity to the believers of Jesus Christ. But I for one will not be holding my breath as I'm sure I would die before anyone associated with any form of media would ever apologize for their insensitivity and intolerance!
Sincerely,
****************************************************************************
Well, sure enough Ted Vaden of the N&O responded in his column. Read it here: Raleigh News Observer
Please note, in his article, it was TOO much for anyone associated with this to apologize! Mr. Vaden did admit, that he too was rather offended but that is as far as it went.
Rev. Creech followed up this response as well. Read it here:
Agape Press
All in all, if we do not speak up we will only see continual abuses such as this one becoming more and more prevalent! Conservatives, and Christians use your Constitutionally guaranteed freedom of speech to speak out!!!! Before it is too late. It is your right and your duty to stop intolerance in all its evil forms.
